Ruby In The Smoke BBC Press Release
Billie Piper and Julie Walters star in
this thrilling adaptation of Philip Pullman's much-loved novel.
Sally Lockhart (Piper) has just struck
a man dead – not with a weapon, though she has a pistol and probably the heart to use it. No, Sally killed Mr Higgs
with just three words: "The Seven Blessings". He died of fear but, unfortunately, Sally has no idea what the words mean.
They were sent to her by her father, just
before he drowned in the South China Seas, in a letter warning Sally of danger to come. The only other person to witness this
strange turn of events is Jim Taylor, the young company dogsbody at the Lockhart And Selby shipping firm. With a passion for
solving mysteries, Jim sets out to help Sally answer the questions surrounding her father's death and, together, they are
quickly drawn into a mystery filled with opium, Chinese Triad gangs, secrets from Sally's own past – and, at the heart
of it all, the Ruby of Agrapur, which was hidden by her father.
However, Sally is not the only person
trying to locate the priceless stone. Her nemesis, a sinister old hag named Mrs Holland (Walters), is desperate to get her
hands on it – and will stop at nothing.
Together, Sally, Fred (a young photographer
who helps Sally escape from Mrs Holland) and Jim pit their wits against the old woman's deadly plans. But, as they are drawn
deeper into the mystery, they realise that Lockhart And Selby was involved in dark and treacherous dealings in the Far East
– dealings which bring them face to face with a villain altogether more terrifying than Mrs Holland and whom Sally will
have to overcome if she is to learn the truth about her father's murder and solve the riddle of her own identity.
Ruby In The Smoke has been adapted by
Adrian Hodges and also stars JJ Feild as Fred Garland and Matt Smith as Jim Taylor.

A Real Treat!
Further to news that Billie will be appearing in the
play Treats WhatsonStage.com have the following article:
Billie Piper may have left TV’s Doctor Who, but
theatregoers won’t have to wait long to catch up with the time traveller’s faithful sidekick. The pop star-turned-actress
will make her theatrical debut, torn between two men, in a revival of Christopher Hampton’s 1976 play Treats in the
new year.
The three-hander opens at the Theatre Royal Windsor where
it runs from 16 to 27 January 2007 ahead of a brief regional tour and West End transfer (exact dates and venues to be confirmed).
In Treats, when young newspaper professional Ann (Piper)
loses her egotistical ex-boyfriend Dave, she tries to rebuild her shattered confidence by forming a rebound relationship with
Patrick, the office bore. All is going as expected until Dave returns on a macho mission to try and win her back. With a barrage
of belittling mockery unleashed on Ann’s new love interest, and home truths mercilessly revealed at every turn, the
question is who – if anyone – will conquer this testosterone-charged battleground and ultimately get the girl.
Piper first shot to pop fame at the age of 15. She had two number 1 singles and several other hits before quitting music
to focus on an acting career. For her Doctor Who role as Rose Tyler, opposite first Christopher Eccleston and then David Tennant,
she won a National Television Award for Most Popular Actress.
Her other TV credits have included The Canterbury Tales,
Much Ado About Nothing, Things to Do Before Your 30 and an upcoming adaptation of Mansfield Park.

tear jerking finale at Bad Wolf Bay.

insight on what to expect from the forthcoming Series Two Box Set!
